The Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament of the Church, instituted by Christ during His earthly ministry, which is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the time of death.
A person does not have to be dying to receive this Sacrament. "As soon as any one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived" (CCC 1514).
If you or a loved one are planning on entering the hospital for surgery or major procedure, it is a good idea to receive the sacrament before hand. Do not depend on the hospital to let us know you are there. If possible, call the church office to notify us when you are admitted.
